I like Missy, but this album wasn't doing it for me at all. Everyone I know likes this album except for my brother and me so everybody will probably say I'm just a hater. I'm not saying this album is completely bad. There are some songs I like, like "Take Away" and both versions of "One Minute Man". The two hidden tracks "I'm Movin' On" and "Higher Ground" are also good, but seriously, gospel songs have no business being on a rap album. Now, the reason most people bought this album was because of the leadoff single "Get Ur Freak On". Honestly, I never liked that song. Sure, the beat is dope (in fact, a lot of the beats on this album are pretty good), but waaaaaait a minute, people! Remember LYRICS? That's what's really lacking on this song, and on most of this album, as a matter of fact...and that's the major downfall. If you wanted to get an album with no lyrical expectations whatsoever, just pick up any Slum Village album! With that said, if you sit down and listen to what Missy and her guests are saying, it's not very impressive. This is especially evident in "Step Off", where Missy says "Even though I'm not your girl any more/And you don't want me no more/I deserve to know who you sleepin' wit". Excuse me? Some of these other songs aren't great either. "Slap! Slap! Slap!" is wack wack wack, "Lick Shots" is a threatening song that comes off as non-threatening, and "Whatcha Gon' Do" has to be one of the wackest songs ever made. There are some halfway-decent songs like "Dog In Heat", "4 My People" with Eve (the song falters when Eve starts speed-rapping; I really hate it when she does that), and "Old School Joint", but this album is still a major disappointment from what I expected from Missy, especially after her brilliant yet forgotten sophomore album Da Real World. Also, for some reason every time Missy curses on here, it's blocked out. If this album is so addictive, please direct me to rehab.
