In the 1980s, a wonderful gentleman and connoisseur of Doo-Wop, the late Bob Hyde, was running a reissue division of Murray Hill Records, until that time purveying mostly Old Time Radio shows on LP. Bob made deals with labels like Roulette to put out quality packages of the best and, sometimes, most overlooked vocal groups of the Fifties. The Monotones were one of the beneficiaries of this lovingly assembled catalogue, with this truly wondrous LP, and now, CD. Every important Hull side is here, remastered by Bob, and we who love Doo-Wop are forever grateful. We lead off with the classic "Book Of Love", which stormed the charts in 1958 all the way up to number three. Then, we skip to 1959's "Fools Will Be Fools" and 1960's "Dream" (mislabeled here as "Dreams"). "Ride Of Paul Revere" follows (originally released as by the Terracetones). The rest of the collection moves from the Monotones' whimsical side ("Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" and "Tom Foolery") to harmonial heaven ("Soft Shadows" and "You Never Loved Me"). And now, we get to the two main reasons for making this CD an essential, a required, a MUST: first, the alternate version of "Book Of Love", which shows our six heroes' rough workout before nailing down the perfect take; the other is a previously unissued song which, if waxed after recording on June 4, 1959, woulda been HUGE! Spin "What Would You Do If There Wasn't Any Rock 'N' Roll" and tell me this would NOT have been a national hit! "Book Of Love" was released on Argo in February of 1958, and rolled through the entire year on teenagers' record players everywhere. If "What Would You Do..." had been released in the summer of '59 instead of the obvious quickie novelty "Tell It To The Judge" (which ain't a bad song, but come on!), the Monotones may very well have had TWO Doo-Wop anthems instead of one. Fortunately for us, Bob Hyde dug it out and enshrined the song forever. Listen to this CD and let your reverie drift back to the Fifties, when six guys could harmonize into history. Yes, indeed: what WOULD we do if there wasn't any rock 'n' roll?
