Recorded in 1984 when Barbara was still very popular in America, this warm, mellow Christmas album is among my favorites. As we celebrate Christmas on December 25th, there can be no more appropriate singer than Barbara, who was born on that exact day in 1948. The album begins with Christmas at our house, an original ballad that sets the mood, followed by the often-recorded Winter Wonderland and the rarely recorded Brook Benton classic This time of the year, both of them superbly revived by Barbara. Next comes Barbara's plea to Santa to bring her man back (Santa bring my baby home), which is a great song but the next (One night a year) is even better. This is followed by another brilliant version of an old chestnut (I'll be home for Christmas), followed by a brilliant but rarely recorded song (It must have been the mistletoe). After this is a great original song (From our house to yours) co-written by Lisa Angelle, who eventually got to release an album of her own songs in the year 2000 - and very good it is too. Of course, by that time, Barbara had retired from the music business. After yet another great original song (Born to die) comes the closing track (Christmas story) which is a cleverly constructed medley featuring the songs in a sequence to describe the events in the appropriate order. Despite the absence of any up-tempo songs, this album has always been among my favorite Christmas albums. Make it one of your favorites.
