Marion and Marit are back, and just as good and sweet as ever. They prove that with "Everything" with its catchy chorus, sung in unison but with a stronger backbeat. Definitely singleworthy material. The Norwegians veer towards a Natalie Imbrugliesque tune with "Jennifer." I'd enjoy the song more if I didn't associate the name with a co-worker, recently departed, who hid a gift certificate belonging to me in addition to stealing money from me. The girl in the song is described as "suuuuupernice" so M2M's Jennifer is okay. Other songs: There is a Beatlesque slant in the verses of "Don't" kind of like "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." The double pounding rhythm of piano and guitar riffs on the choruses of "What You Do About Me" one of the standout tracks on The Big Room. "Love Left For Me" is a song that could've been on Shades Of Purple as this is one song where they sing together more. "Miss Popular" is the portrait of the title character, a high school student probably, whose poll numbers have gone down, so to speak and she spreads her misery to everyone else. I've known people like that in high school and when Marit sings "Everybody hates you/Poor Miss Popular, I don't feel a bit sorry for you" I think, "Right on!" They've coopted a rock guitar in "Wanna Be Where You Are." Strings are there too, and the song has the tones of a rock ballad, although it's nice to hear Marit's voice with only a piano accompanying her. Another standout track. "Sometimes" races with its quick pace and finishes at under three minutes. It plays like a neo-retro, Bangleseque/Mellencamp 80's tune. "Eventually" is the closing ballad but without the emotional potency of "Why" from their previous album. The sound is consistent, though not as polished as Shades Of Purple. They've traded in the Wilson Phillips sound and much of the strings, and torn pages from Natalie Imbruglia's book, ironic, considering how The Big Room and Natalie's new album had the same release day in the U.S. The acoustic guitar and piano are still here, though louder percussion is very much in presence. Marion Raven has emerged the prominent vocalist, sounding more like a younger version of Natalie Imbruglia, while Marit's Baby Spice-ish voices seem muted in solo verses. Both have potential of being effective solo artists should enmity come between them, but I hope that never happens. The thing is, I got so charmed with their singing in harmony and the lack of it here is kind of jarring. This album clocks in at 37 minutes, so it's an average of about three and a half minutes per song. Round two for M2M is another solid effort that proves they'll be around longer.
