What makes "Amarok" different from almost every other Oldfield album is the edge to it. This is *not* the new-age easy listening of "...Distant Earth". It's spiky, with random mood swings and unexpected detours; from majestic beauty to manic anger, then back again. All done with warped humour, including the finale as Margaret Thatcher starts dancing around in hobnail boots... As I listened to "Amarok" the first couple of times, I kept thinking "Blimey, I wasn't expecting *that*." And I like to be surprised, musically speaking... Perhaps it's just me, but the sound of this album seems to sum up the England I grew up in.
