The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."
To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at http://www.ilovethatsong.com/green.
UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam®, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Shorewood Packaging is the first North American packaging supplier to produce disc trays from PaperFoam®.
The Oak Ridge Boys deserve to have at least one Millenium Collection released (if not more), but should it be done to accomodate MCA's increasingly cheap approach to older artists? This collection would not be quite to bad if MCA hadn't released "The Oak Ridge Boys COLLECTION" nearly 10 years earlier. At least that package got original artwork and liner notes. When it became inevitable that the Oaks needed a Millenium Collection, what did MCA do? They simply pulled the 1992 "Collection" off the market (which had been certified Gold not too long before), slapped an old album photo on it (the original cover for "American Made," to be exact), and ever so slightly edited the track list. The result: a POOR excuse for a new release. All but one of the songs on this release appeared on the '92 collection ("Bobbie Sue," conspicuously absent from the prior release, and "Make My Life With You" are the only additions). Amazing, two of the Oaks' biggest hits, "Y'all Come Back Saloon" and "Thank God For Kids" were cut altogether (I guess to save even more money). Even the liner notes are nearly identical to the '92 release. I see no reason for this total lack of concern for a top-notch group such as the Oaks. Since they have so many more hits, perhaps MCA will consider doing a Volume Two Millenium release (with a NEW cover photo and DIFFERENT song line-up!!)
