Here's yet another distributor who seems to think that a viable "best of" for an artist or artists with more than a few hit singles is one with a mix of such hits with album cuts. Nuts. In the day of the 45 rpm it was the single hit they all sought because that's what made them famous. And for a duo like Peaches & Herb, who had 23 R&B hits from 1966 to 1983, with 17 of them crossing over to the Billboard Pop Hot 100 and three to the Adult Contemporary (AC) charts, a 16-track release titled "the best of" had better include 16 of those legitimate hits! This one gives you their first nine for the Date label coupled with seven album cuts. There are also four pages of liner notes written by Touré, a regular contributor to The New Yorker, the NY Times, and The Village Voice, along with a discography of the contents and some more nice photos of the couple. The sound quality is excellent. All of which i to say, had this been titled differently - say, A Look Back At Peaches & Herb or something along those lines - it would rate 5 stars. But it doesn't, and so as far as I'm concerned as a collector of hits, it rates no more than three. Even if the excuse is that this volume was intended only to cover their Date output, it loses because they contrived to leave off their last two Date hits: Let Me Be The One (# 40 R&B/# 74 Hot 100 in late summer 1969) and It's Just A Game Of Love (# 50 R&B/# 110 Hot 100 "bubble under" in June 1970. The other things is, if those album cuts were so good, why were they not released as B-sides? Instead, the label felt they needed to use the same B-side twice in two instances: I Need Your Love So Desperately backed both For Your Love (# 10 R&B/# 20 Hot 100 in summer 1967) and the afore-mentioned Let Me Be The One, while Thank You backed United (# 11 R&B/# 46 Hot 100 in July 1968) and When He Touches Me [Nothing Else Matters} (# 10 R&B/# 49 Hot 100 in spring 1959). Indeed, not one B-side is included here either. So, all things considered, a 5-star volume for Peaches & Herb fans who don't care about hits, and just 3 stars for those of us who want their hits.
