Com Lag is an expensive EP. In addition to that it has a bad glitch. Track 7, the remix of Scatterbrain, is ruined by a static hiss that comes out of nowhere. Gosh, if that's not generosity, I don't know what is. And rather than recall the faulty product, EMI issues another pressing that corrects the problem but comes at the same ridiculous price. Way to go EMI. Way to alienate the faithful. Why don't you come over to my place and scratch all of my CDs with rusty nails? I'll pay you for your services. Enough of that. On to the content. Radiohead is known within collectors' circles as being a strong b-side band. Any single from Radiohead's past is testimony to that...until now. Com Lag collects all of the b-sides (except for the There There demo) from the Hail To The Thief sessions, and it's not that impressive. Gagging Order is probably the most notable, but the rest suffer from bad identity crises. Is it dance? Is it pointillism? Is it experimental pop? Is it a daring new remix? Most of the time, it's non of these. Com Lag's redeeming quality is the first track, a live recording of 2+2=5 and it is ferocious. I've never heard Radiohead bang away at anything this hard ever before. It almost makes me wish I could have dropped a bunch of cash on tickets and service charges to catch them on the Hail To The Thief tour during the summer of 2003. Then I remind myself that I hate ticketmaster. Other than that, Com Lag doesn't have much going for it. And that's a shame because I remember buying the Airbag EP after OK Computer and being very impressed with the caliber of songs that got rejected from an already successful album. But this is not even in the same ball park. And considering the clumsy glitch in the mastering process, it's barely worth finding. Comments (2) | Permalink | (Report this)
