Nina Deutsch gives a sensitive rendition of the important piano works of Ives. Having studied with John Kirkpatrick and William Masselos (who premiered the Second and First Sonatas), Deutsch is intimately familiar with the various conflicting Ives scores. According to Deutsch, there are over twenty versions of the Emerson movement (of the Concord), and she says Ives never intended to finish it. This performance is based on her own edition of the score. The problem of the Emerson movement is highlighted in the Four Emerson Transcriptions which are included on the cd. For Ives, Emerson and Beethoven were closely related. The first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony appear throughout the Concord, but are central to the Emerson movement. Ms. Deutsch clocks a fast Concord, 38 minutes (about the same as John Kirkpatrick). There is an error on the cd, listing Ives' Waltz Rondo as the fifth movement of the Concord. While it is the fifth track on the first cd, it is a distinct work from the Concord. Comment | Permalink | (Report this)
