I would give this very good album three-and-a-half stars. Another Platinum-selling success, ANY LOVE also deserves special mention as Luther's first release to crack the Hot 200's much-coveted Top Ten, peaking at #9. It's obvious that Luther was really aiming for the mainstream pop audience with this release, and as a result, he takes less chances with ANY LOVE. There's no denying that this album sounds much lighter and glossier than his previous masterpieces, but that's not necessarily a complaint. In fact, Luther can construct mainstream pop better than any of his contemporaries. And above all else, ANY LOVE is yet another showcase for Luther's underrated songwriting ability. Like his five previous recordings, this album is full of rich melodies and lyrics that manage to just avoid cliché. Luther is always finding new ways to explore the much-cover subject of love, while seldomly seeming banal or generic. The songs "I Know You Want To," "Second Time Around," and the radio hit "For You To Love" (#3 R&B) all feature lovely melodies that are grounded by thoughtful lyrics. He is equally successful at crafting infectious up-tempo material, evidenced here by "I Wonder," "Come Back," and the irresistible hit "She Won't Talk To Me" (#30 Pop, #3 R&B, #17 Adult Contemporary). The album's only cover ("Love Won't Let Me Wait") may not compare to his earlier cover triumphs, however it is arranged impeccably and well-suits Luther's flawless delivery. Another factor in this album's success is Luther's expertise in effectively constructing his recordings; ANY LOVE never sounds thrown together or spotty. Of very special mention is the gorgeous title track (#44 Pop, #1 R&B, #12 Adult Contemporary), which stands as the most beautifully performed, produced, and composed song of 1989 - It's a crime it wasn't a major pop hit! A terrific song, from a very good album.
