This is the beginning for someone who never heard zarzuela. It is one of the most popular of all times. And why? Because of the story, and the music. Settled in Madrid at the begining of the XXth it tells the love story between a seamstress and her beloved. in the days of the most typical fair in Madrid La Verbena de la Paloma. WE have wonderful characters. Don Hilarion, the apothecary who pursues the seamstress. Julian the hero in love with Susana. La señá Antonia, Susana's aunt who wants that any of her nieces marry don Hilarion. It is dificult to translate the word "castizo", in English I supose cockney will be the most similar. All the topics of and about Madrid are here. It has great songs. "¿Dónde vas con manton the Manila?" is probably one of the most famous romanzas of zarzuela.But the dialogues are sharp, funny and witty too. This version is a very good one, although I think Domingo was a little older for Julian. María Bayo, excelent like always. And Pons. Well there is nothing wrong with him, as usual. Even if you do not speak Spanish the music is so catchy that once you have heard it you will not forget it.
