Audivis, a French recording company had done a great deal to introduce the music world to the delights of zarzuela. This CD have excerpts from some of the best moments of zarzuelas already recorded by Audivis, like La Tabernera del puerto, Luisa Fernanda, El barberillo de Lavapiés, Bohemios, La Verbena de la Paloma, Doņa Francisquita and the Spanish opera Goyescas. These delighful melodies are brought to life with the voices and artistry of Placido Domingo and Maria Bayo. Domingo bring his beautiful sound and passion to arias like No puede ser from La Taberbera del Puerto and Romance de Javier from Luisa Fernanda. These two arias are two of the best tenor solos of the genre and really comparable to any Puccini aria. Bayo shines with her silvery voice, her coloratura is cristal clear in the solos from La Tabernera del Puerto and Doņa Francisquita and her pianissimo singing is a joy in La Maja y el Ruiseņor from Goyescas. Apart from the solos, there are very fine duets, not only between Domingo and Bayo, but also with other artists, among them the great Alfredo Kraus. There are also some delightful orchestral preludes that bring the listener an idea of how diverse and energetic is the music of Zarzuela. This CD showcases Domingo and Bayo singing in their first language with skill and brio. And probably will bring the listener the oportunity to hear the complete works in a near future.
