Ever since their debut release of "Jugular" VOL fans everywhere have been awaiting another acoustic album. Of course their have been acoustic songs on other albums, but this is an acoustic album! A few of these songs also appear on "Audible Sigh" the groups latest electric release (that was available, then wasn't, and is about to be again!...record company nightmare.) Singer, guitarist, lyricist Bill Mallonee's words are best conveyed in an acoustic vehicle, and this stripped down sensibility suits his no nonsense message quite well. VOL is one of those groups that are the critics' darlings, and they have a small, rabid & extremely devoted fanbase, but haven't managed to get that mainstream appeal yet. It probably has something to do with the fact that they wrestle with tough issues. Musically speaking, the group is definately from the south (and there's no shame there.) Its got a good southern feel (its not country though), and mixes equal parts south & Dylan-esque folk while being original and not ripping off! In my opinion, they are one of the few bands that consistently puts out great tunes. They make you think about life, eternity, but they do it without being tiresome. You can relax to it, philosophize to it and definately take these anthems to heart. Highly recommended for great lyrics, beautiful & simple melodies and some smoking mandolin! go see them live if you get the chance!
