I've been a big fan of this CD ever since someone miss-filed it into the "dance/electronica" bin at The Finest in Fort Collins, CO over 4 years ago. This CD was a soundtrack to my life, and to this day still a very under-rated album. But lets get one thing perfectly straight, this is not techno. Adam Beyer, John Selway, Christian Smith, Jark Prongo, Frankie Bones... They are techno. Techno is catagorized by having a 138-145+ BPM, heavy synth use, typically mixed with rolling basslines, repeditive sfx hits, and use of multiple drum layers on a 4/4 beat. Good stuff, don't get me wrong, but nothing on "Distort" comes close to that discription. Just because they use a old 303(the Atari sounding synth that finds a home on most of the tracks on "Distort) doesn't make them a techno act. Vitro rocks with great syncopated drums, viscious grunge-y guitars, and unique vocals. People who classify God Lives Underwater, Junkie XL (Saturday Teenage Kick), or even KMFDM/MDFMK with Vitro in their "techno" collection really should spend some time learning what the differences are between the different genre's... God Lives Underwater stated in an interview that they were sick of people labeling them a techno act... call it industrial rock, post grunge (or alternative all ways seems to be a big enough catagory). If you want some techno, might I recomend Adam Beyer's "Stockholm Mix Sessions 3"... but be warned, you won't find catchy vocals or guitars on that CD.
