Fancy Dog's Rockin Christmas is a collection of honky-tonk and rockabilly renditions of Christmas songs performed by guitarist Dan Neale. The album itself is actually pretty good, filled with some excellent southern-fried guitar playing and a nice selection of songs. Especially good are the swinging "Sleigh Ride" and the laid-back "Christmas Time Is Here," both which show the different sides of this style of playing. This may be a little too country for some listeners, but for the most part this stays in a rocking vein. Fans of rockabilly and honky-tonk may want to give this a listen, as there are some genuinely good songs on this collection.

I have a lot of Christmas CDs, many of which don't get played every year, but this one always gets a spin along with Phil Spector, Graham Parker, "A Christmas Party with Eddie G.", The Ventures and, most recently, Los Straitjackets. In the tradition of The Ventures Christmas Album, Dan Neale does different guitar instrumental takes on Christmas classics, but where The Ventures played off the pop and surf hits of the day, these are mostly country guitar instros with a few other styles thrown in. What stands out for me is the rockin' chicken picking on "Winter Wonderland" and "Let It Snow". If you're a guitarist (or anyone) who likes that style - hunt this one down. Pick music up as a gamble now and then and you find a gem like this. Thanks, Fancy Dog!
