2003 sophomore release for Columbia finds Pete Yorn once again his own musical architect, writing all of the songs, playing many of the instruments & co-producing with R. Walt Vincent & Scott Litt. Features 19 tracks including 3 bonus tracks, 'Drive Away', '17' & 'Suspicious Minds' (Elvis cover), plus enhanced material featuring 2 tracks, 'Come Back Home' (Video) & 'Making of The Day I Forgot' (Video Footage).

This review is from: Day I Forgot (Audio CD) For anyone who's already heard Musicforthemorningafter, this sophomore release will appear to be more average than great. But on the other hand, if this is your first listen of Pete Yorn, you'd probably be mildly impressed. A few of these songs are very good on their own; but when compared to anything off his debut, they again become more average. There is no prominent single like "Strange Condition", "Life On A Chain", "For Nancy", or even "Just Another". Songs (here) like "Come Back Home" and "Pass Me By" are failed attempts to reincarnate those earlier hits. Since it is so tough to release better follow-ups in the present time, it can be condoled that this one is not as good as the first. But that doesn't necessarily make it worthwhile. Here's an overview of each track: 1. Intro - 2/5 - like so many other intros, this 47-second track doesn't really amount to much. Nevertheless the lyrics are still good; and there is a beat. 2. Come Back Home - 4/5 - dubbed as the first single, "Come Back Home" is a good track. It's not my favorite, but it's still very good and easy to listen to. The music seems to be more upbeat compared to Musicforthemorningafter; which can be taken as either good or bad. 3. Crystal Village - 4.5/5 - this one seems to be single-bound, and it probably would do pretty well if radio accepted it. This is one of my favorites on the CD; as it kind sounds like a heavier (choice word) version of the beautiful "Lose You". 4. Carlos (Don't Let It Go To Your Head) - 2.5/5 - it's hard to believe, when looking at the debut, that this song is from the same person. "Carlos" is very different and doesn't offer any change of beat, catchy tunes, or good lyrics. 5. Pass Me By - 2.5/5 - the melody within this track is very weak. The rhyming doesn't come close to anything Yorn did before; and therefore the song becomes nothing special. Sadly enough, the first five songs here are zilch compared to "Life On A Chain", "Strange Condition", "Just Another", "Black", and "Lose You". I almost lost interest after these five tracks... 6. Committed - 5/5 - ...But this one brought me back. This is another one of the album's best. And it might even be my personal favorite. It's a slower track; which is something that Pete Yorn is very, very good at. Yet it's barely worthy of a five-out-of-five. 7. Long Way Down - 3.5/5 - this is just your average alternative rock song. It's very similar to "Pass Me By", but has a little better background sound to it. Again, it's nothing special and can't be compared to anything on Musicforthemorningafter. 8. When You See The Light - 3/5 - although the lyrics here are very good, the music is not. Musically it's one of the worst on the CD. It's very hard to (want to) sing along to; and doesn't become catchy or painstaking at any moment. 9. Turn Of The Century - 4/5 - I actually like this song. It's another slow one, though not with the appeal that track 6 offers. Once more, the words are what make it enjoyable and not the music. That's becoming old hat here; which is depressing. 10. Burrito - 5/5 - this is (most likely) my favorite song on Day I Forgot. Although, at first glance, the lyrics seem silly and almost stupid, they are actually very good. The opening lines `it's a 7-11 / do you wanna take a walk outside / if you want a burrito / you can have another bite of mine' are great and amazing. This is the ONLY song that is on the same level as Yorn's debut. Similar to "Closet". 11. Man In Uniform - 2/5 - after the glorifying, upbeat "Burrito", this song becomes a big letdown. Although its sound is somewhat pleasing, it's nothing that we haven't heard before. It could've used a lighter sound. 12. All At Once - 2/5 - I have yet to understand what this track was trying to accomplish. If you want to take note of anything here, take note of the words; the music is almost bad. Other than the lyrics it's weak and yet again: nothing new. 13. - ?/5 - there is no track 13. Why I don't know. There might be some hidden meaning behind it; but to the average listener it's just three seconds of silence. 14. So Much Work - 3/5 - this is a pretty good closer for the type of album this was. It's average, with some good lyrics, but no swings/changes in the music. It's not bad, but it doesn't manage to leave you with the great feeling that Musicforthemorningafter left you with. I'm just going to come out and say this is a bad follow-up release. Sugar-coding it wouldn't be right. Only if know nothing about Pete Yorn (meaning you don't have the debut) will you find this album enjoyable. Only two of these tracks got a five-out-of-five rank; and most of the others are simplistic and weak compared to anything off Musicforthemorningafter. I will probably never choose to listen to this over his stellar debut, and I can't see how anyone else would either. All the same, if you are a diehard Pete Yorn fan you will most likely benefit from listening to this. You could say Pete was just broadening his music talents with this release; but in the end it only appears as middling and short of good. Be very careful in purchasing this album.
