Whilst many of the covers are typically US punk reworkings by bands such as Coffin Break, there are some of the best bands to come out of Seattle and a few bands with links to REM. Barrett Martin(who initially took over from Bill Berry on drums) appears with his old band Skin Yard with a faithful if undramatic version of Machine Gun Etiquette. Ken Stringfellow (REM keyboardist) plays with his band The Posies on a 'polite'(you'll know what I mean when you hear it) reworking of Smash It Up and Scott McCaughey(REM 2nd Guitarist and Peter Buck's partner in crime) appears with his band The Young Fresh Fellows on probably the greatest cover version ever - 'Life Goes On' which is slower than the original exposing where Kurt took inspiration for the riff for 'Come As You Are'. Other highlights include The Fastbacks 'Hit or Miss' which captures the fun of the original and Mudhoney's blitz through 'Stab Your Back'. There are also excellent versions of 'Antipope' and 'Melody Lee' which cleverly lifts the intro from the original as if somebody is tuning the radio and comes across the song before it goes into a heavily phased recreation. Not all of this album is very good(Motorhoney's 'Psychomania' is truly dreadful), but it's worth it for the 6 or 7 stand out covers.
